RESULTS OF JUNE 3 MEETING SPECIAL ELECTION

From the success of other Sections holding monthly meetings, the DPS will begin a plan next fall of scheduling social programs, open to the general public, involving no business transactions but rather slide shows of climbing events. An adequate centralized meeting place will be established and publicity given. This will start on a bi-monthly basis, and the first such show will take place in November. We would like to get Los Angeles Times coverage for the program.
Three new peaks have been reviewed, after having had scheduled trips to them. These peaks have been submitted for addition to the list of Qualifying Peaks of the Section. It was decided that a special election be held so that all members would have a chance to voice their opinion as to their inclusion. The ones named are: Marble Mtn (4313') off Highway 66 near Amboy in San Bernardino County, Reviewed by Andy Smatko. Turtle Mtn (3900') NW of Vidal Jct. in San Bernardino County. This is the high point of the range. Reviewed by Harry Melts. Jacumba Mtn (4512') Within Anza-Borrego State Park in San Diego Co. Reviewed by Arkel Erb. These peaks are all class 1 climbs and are of easy access. The Management Committee feels they are all of Qualifying Peak caliber and should be added to the list.
All members are urged to cast their ballots by July 1 to the Secretary-Treasurer. An enclosed clip-off ballot will be found on the last sheet of this Newsletter. Send it in now!!!!
The next schedule has been arranged. The long Thanksgiving weekend will be devoted to a return climb of Cerro de la Encantada (Big Picacho) in Mexico. Remember this was attempted two years ago and the peak was never reached due to technical difficulties. Last year's outlaw trip three should be the key to everyone getting there this time with the new experience gained. It is not an easy climb.

DID YOU KNOW?

One more of our desert peaks, and a Qualifying Peak on our list, COSO PEAK, has recently suffered scars with a new road to its summit. One by one, we gradually lose our isolated places of beauty due to ever-increasing urban expansion. A mountain with a road all the way just doesn't have much flavor.

Sheephole Mtn & Whipple Mtn
Sheephole was scheduled for Sat. Mar 27. The leaders were the last to arrive and found the group waiting at the telephone company microwave tower in the 29 Palms-Amboy pass. Thirteen people made the easy climb and returned to the cars about 3 PM. Most of the group then adjourned to 29 Palms for dinner, after which the group began to break up. Two people had commitments in LA and a third party, Gene Andreosky, was leading a 100 Pks trip to Eureka and Chaparrosa on Sunday, so our lot dwindled to ten.
