The annual elections having come and gone making this my last paragraph as your Chairmen. The year has been a very short on indeed. In it I was only able to be in this area for two months and I did have the opportunity to be present on one grand hike. The response to the recent Newcomer's climb was most gratifying. Here many congregated for their very first desert event, while others had just finished their Basic Mountaineering Course. Enthusiasm was rampant. It was very apparent that this type of event -especially on this peak- is a drawing card for new people, just exactly what the Sierra Club in general, the DPS in particular needs. From the after-hike conversations, the day itself filled many souls with mental uplifts, and I heard no one remark that they would not like to come back again. In our climbing we are given exercise, great views, we scan the flora and fauna, and we enjoy the trail camaraderie. Each is a facet in contributing to the worthwhileness of the venture. I feel this particular climb should and can easily be worked into an Annual Newcomer event having a half a dozen leaders or more, so that each new party is personally contacted and briefed on the surroundings, much in the manner of the Grand Canyon mule trips (sans mules). Much attention, I know, stimulates the neophyte, and makes for lasting impressions of our Section. Let’s work on such a thought!
