FEB 4 MEETING Baboquivari Peak in Southern Arizona has been added to our list of Qualifying Desert peaks. By a vote of the quorum present, Cerro de la Encantada (Big Picacho) is Baja California, was designated an Emblem Peak. This however is not official yet, as a change in the By-Laws is required. It will be held over until the next meeting for adoption. The intent is to have six emblem peaks instead of the present five, and to allow a choice of any five emblem peaks plus ten qualifying peaks for emblem status. The following people were nominated for the 1965-1966 Management Committee:
A dedicatory climb of Chester Versteeg Peak, in honor of our DPS founder, has been planned for next September. RECAP of 1964
SEASON-John Robinson1964 was a successful year for the Section. Fourteen scheduled trips(omitting two cancellations)saw a turn-out of 263 persons, for an average climbers-per-trip of 18.8 for the year. This shows a 3 percent increase over 1963. The year's top turn-out was the 43 persons on KNOW YOUR DESERT PEAKS No. 11 over the weekend of Feb 1-2. The attendance ranges clear down to a booby prize of three spirited souls for the ascent of Waucoba Mtn in late June. DID YOU KNOW? Members Niles & Louis Werner had a misfortune while traveling in Mexico on an extended tour? Few detail are known at this writing but the train on which they were riding shortly before Christmas was wrecked and Niles suffered the loss of his right arm and has a broken leg. Louise apparently was uninjured. Niles is recuperating at Juan Grahm Hospital Villehermosa, in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. How about sending him a message. About members Ruth Karimi and Arkel Erb? She is now Ruth Erb. They were married last month. Congratulations! The newer Desert Peaks had better watch out? Frede Jensen is back with us after a several year stint in Europe and Canada. Frede, you remember, had the honor some years ago as having climbed all of the Desert peaks on the list. Quite a number have been added since his departure. No doubt some of these peaks have seen him already. He, too, deserves the title of Dean of the Desert Peakers. Walt Wheelock is enjoying writing in his retirement? He has authored several books on California historical transportation systems. His most local one is about Angels Flight Railway in Los Angeles. |
