DID YOU KNOW?

Fire damaged 2000 acres of pinon pine stands on the northerly slopes of Kingston Peak, one of our qualifiers, on Sept. 9th. Blaze was believed to have been started by sparks of a mechanized two-wheel vehicle.

Hugh Parshall doesn't believe in Desert Peaks being dry. His last three, all made on scheduled climbs with the Section this year, have ended up with violent snowstorms, though the summits were all reached. These include Orocopia (least expected to have any moisture), Tucki, and White.

Russ Hubbard wants to lead a trip to Porter Peak with aid of pickups and 4-wheel drive vehicles. It has been ruled out as a club outing since it caters to only a certain breed. He advises there is a closed gate which will be opened for us. There is fine camping upstairs in South Park Canyon. This is in the Panamint Range about 5 miles south of Sentinel Peak. The 10-stamp mill ruins of the World Beater mine remain. Sounds like a fine jaunt. Porter Peak is at 9101' and offers excellent views of the Death Valley scene. Those interested in Russ's proposal contact him thru the SC schedule. We thank him for his desert leadership hospitality.

Our Section regularly swaps newsletters with the Southern Arizona Hiking Club, Box 12122, Tucson, Arizona. They cover the Catalina, Chiricahua, Huachuca, & the Santa Rita Ranges, Their HAPPY HIKING song:
Show me the way to go home
I'm tired and I want to hit the sack
I rappelled off an overhang an hour ago
