RECAP of 1963 SEASON             JWR

1963 Was a banner year for the DPS. 15 scheduled trips saw a total turn-out of 350 participants, for an average of 23.3 per trip. Seldom before has the Section averaged over 20 per trip (possibly never - statistics on years previous to 1961 are incomplete).
Honors for the year's top turn-out went to Bob Greenawalts's magnificent Grand Canyon Traverse bus trip last Memorial Day weekend, with a total participation of 90 persons. This also rates as the all-time best turn-out for the Section, surpassing the previous record of 75 (Sheephole's Bus Trip, Jan. 1957).
Four other scheduled trips saw turn-outs in excess of 30. Tom and Trudie Hunt's Tajo Canyon adventure in February saw a group of 37 enjoy the canyon descent, with guide service by the legendary Bud Bernhard.
The Hunt's bus trip traverse to Martinez Peak in March, inspite of snowy weather, attracted 33, as did Andy Smatko's enjoyable thogh unsuccessful La Encantada trip over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend. The Kofa-Castle Dome trip in November, led by Walt Wheelock and Lothar Kolbig, attarcted 32 emblem hunters.
At the other end of the scale, three trips saw turn-outs of less than 10. Palmetto-Magruder peaks in May won the booby prize with only 6.

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK             JWR

I want to thank trip leaders for showing more propmptness in sending in Write-ups for this issue. This is a responsibility that sometimes in the past has been neglected.
Those interested in an eight-page researched report on La Encantada and the Sierra San Pedro Martir, covering briefly the geography, ecology, history, and climbing attempts on the peak, write to the editor, enclosing a 5¢ stamp. A copy will promptly be mailed you. This originally was to be a part of this Newsletter, but lack of space prohibited it.
