JAN 4-5: MOPAH PEAK (3514')
This sheer volcanic plug near Parker Dam Looks unclimbable without hardware. However, the DPS will use a hidden class 3 route known as "The Keyhole". This is truly a spectacular, breath-taking, and scenic ascent. Drive north 12.9 miles from Vidal Junction to a rough dirt road, then northwest 5 miles to camp Saturday afternoon. Early Sunday climb peak, then drive home. Hiking 6 miles. Leaders: GENE GAIL and ABE SIDIENS.

JAN. 18-19: EAGLE PEAK (3806')
This is a short but highly interesting class 3 scramble up a strikingly serrated uplifteast of Death Valley. A real fun climb! Meet in Shoshone Saturday for swimming in a naturally heated pool. (Girls wear bikinis) Camp there Sat night, caravan to start of climb Sun morning. Hiking 3-4 miles. Leaders: ANDY SMATKO and ELLEN SIEGAL.

FEB 1-2: RABBIT PEAK (6623')
This sage-covered whaleback peak towers over the Salton Sea on one side and Anza Desert State Park on the other. It is required climbing for those earning the emblem. Strenuous but non-technical. Meet 9 a.m. Sat at the junction of US 99 and 74th Ave., 15-1/2 miles south of Indio. Backpack 6 miles to a WATERLESS campsite and climb peak Sunday. Bring enough water for the whole weekend. Hiking 18 miles with 6600 feet elevation gain. Leaders: JOHN ROBINSON and FRANK SANBORN. Those interested in a one day marathon climb of the peak Sunday contact TOM HUNT. This death march will begin early Sunday morning from the same roadhead. A good conditioner!

FEB. 6: BUSINESS MEETING. Section members are urged to attend this important business meeting at Chapter Headquarters in L.A. (7:30 p.m.). Vote on additions to peak list, plan July-October schedule, and nominate 64-65 officers.

FEB. 15-16: OROCOPIA PEAK (3815'). This dry, rocky desert peak just northeast of the Salton Sea offers superb panoramas of the large inland lake and the fertile irrigated farmland adjacent to it. Good rock-hound areas are nearby. Meet in the park in the center of Mecca at 10 am. Sat., caravan along All-American Canal to the dry campsite. Sunday climb peak via class 2 route and drive home. Bring water. Hiking 8 miles. Leaders: HUGH PARSHALL and BOB GREENAWALT.

FEB. 29-MAR. 1: PICACHO PEAK (1947!). This sheer volcanic monolith resembles Mopah only more so. From the road it looks impossible without hardware. However, an intricate series of ledges leads to the summit with only a few "bad" spots
