DPS Newsletter

CHAIRMAN'S COLUMN            John Robinson

Following in the footsteps of Harry Melts is going to be quite a job. 1961 was a banner year for the DPS - a new set of by-laws were drafted and adopted, our qualifying peaks list reached a all-time high of 54 worthy desert summits, and the newsletter was put on a regularly appearing basis.
1961 was a year of progress and improvement. 1962 should be a year to consummate these forward movements. We've got a good spring schedule, highlighted by the Hi-Lo Panamint bus trip in April; Let's participate and enjoy this program of activities to the fullest.
Trudie Hunt deserves a good deal of credit for arranging our banquet this March 28. She did a wonderful job in lining up Dr. Walter Taylor, President of the Desert Protective Council, as the featured speaker. Let's hope for a large turn-out, including many of our revered "old timers" we so seldom see now days.
The DPS scrapbook has recently been brought up to date. Thanks largely to the efforts of such past custodians as Rose Marie Balsam, the scrapbook contain an excellent chronicle of DPS activities dating back to the section founding in 1941. To further improve the scrapbook, any pictures pertaining to DPS activities past or present would be appreciated.

ANNUAL BANQUET WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28TH      Trudie Hunt
In the past the DPS has had a triennial banquet, the last with Weldon Heald as guest speaker at the Rainbow Angling Club in Azusa, summer of 1957. Now we hope to inaugurate a sociable annual dinner meeting. Dr. Walter P. Taylor, lecturer in Conservation Education at the Claremont Graduate School, Leopold Medal winner (the highest honor of the Wildlife Society), and president of the Desert Protective Council will speak briefly and show slides of the desert. But mainly we will visit with hiking friends and enjoy a good buffet dinner for only $2.75 at the Dinnerhorn Restaurant in Covina. Take the San Bernardino Freeway to Azusa Avenue, then north to number 540. Reservations with a check for $2.75 should reach Trudie Hunt, 19770 Lorencita Dr., Covina by March 25th.
