TIN & UBEHEBE (Continued)
The next morning, after a balmy night and leisurely breakfast, 11 persons started up precipitous Ubehebe Peak (5678'), which proved to be a fine class three climb up a chute laced with dry waterfalls. Due to the loose and rather dangerous condition of the main chute, the climb was completed up a steep, narrow but solid trough directly to the summit.
8 persons made the peak after a two hour climb, three having turned back at a steep dry waterfall where a rope could have been used to insure safety.
All were in their cars and headed home via Death Valley early in the afternoon. The short cut through Saline Valley via the Lippencot Lead Mine road was not taken, since the leaders had found the road a bit rough two weeks earlier (i.e. 6 miles in 2-1/2 hours).

COSO PEAK (8150'), April 30      by Walt Wheelock
On April 30, the DPSers explored a new route to Coso Peak via Lower Centennial Flat. The route proved to be a direct but simple way to the summit.
The trip showed the effect of "multiple use" in our mountains. A hundred years ago, mining, logging, and grazing denuded this area. Now, trees six to twelve feet tall are again attempting to cover the slopes, replacing the giants whose stumps were plainly seen along the climb.

MT. CHARLESTON (11,918') BUS TRIP CANCELLED, BUT FOUR MAKE IT BY CAR
   May 19-20          by Harry Melts

Despite the cancelled bus trip (Only 20 signed up, 32 needed), four persons drove to Mt. Charleston and climbed the peak on Saturday, May 20.
We started at the campground by taking the South loop Trail. After escaping whistling bullets from an unseen nearby shooter, we emerged into peaceful surroundings of meadows with flowers and high snow banks under shadowy trees. Mt. Charleston surprises by resembling Sierra type landscape in the middle of the desert.
Return was made via the North Loop Trail of which a part was still under snow. I highly recommend prospective climbers take the full loop and not return via the same trail.
