A SYNOPSIS OF THE D.P.S. MEETING OF FEBRUARY 22, 1961    by Monroe Levy

The first D.P.S. meeting of 1961 was held at club headquarters, 7:30 p.m., February 22nd. There were 20 members present. Harry Melts, Chairman of the section, presided.

A report on the D.P.S. Newsletter was presented by John Robinson. The paper will be published bi-monthly from October to June, the desert climbing months. There was a discussion of a possible change in the title of the Newsletter; Suggestions included Ram's Horn, Desert Call, Cactus Chatter, Desert Wind, and Sand and Stars. John Robinson was appointed chairman of the committee to select an appropriate name.

A motion by Walt Wheelock to charge one dollar a year for the Newsletter and to make subscription to it mandatory for D.P.S. membership was voted upon and passed.

Walt Wheelock gave a report on the Desert Peaks Guide. Part one is completed and ready for publication. Part two should be completed within two years.

Parker Severson spoke on the merits of the Desert Protective Council and recommended its publication "El Paisano".

Harry Melts brought up for a vote four suggested additions to the D.P.S. qualifying peak list. Voted upon favorably and added to the list were Pinto Peak, Palen Mountain, and Orocopia Peak. Turtle Mountain was voted down as it was not the high point of the range.

Two other suggested additions to the qualifying peak list were discussed and will be voted upon at the next meeting. Andy Smatko and Alden Sorbo recommended Granite Mtn. #2; Bill Henderson suggested Pinacate Pk. in northwestern Sonora, Mexico.

The Summer schedule (June-Sept, 1961) was discussed by John Robinson. Three trips are planned: Mt DuBois on July 1-4 Led by Bill Henderson, Mt. Jefferson on Sept. 2-4 led by Alden Sorbo, and White Mtn. on Sept. 23-24 led by Hugh Parshall.

Harry Melts discussed the necessity of better summit registers. Walt Wheelock recommended Telephone Junction Boxes. A motion to purchase 15 of these boxes was voted on and approved.

John Robinson introduced the new trip leaders' form and urged leaders to fill one our promptly after their trip.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m. and was followed by color slides, cookies and cider.
