DPS Emblem DESERT PEAKS SECTION - NEWSLETTER No. 58

   ANGELES CHAPTER - SIERRA CLUB

Dear Desert Peaker:       Feb. 10, 1960

We opened this year with a well attended trip to Kofa and Castle Dome. Not only did this trip draw out many of our Section, but it was exceptionally well attended by members of our sister sections and by many other Club members. Bob Bear, the scheduled leader, sneaked off to Old Mexico, so the Hunts ran this trip, with Peter leading and Trudie rounding up the strays. Then on Jan. 23-24, Bill Sanders and Peter led a third-class (?) route up along Mopah Peak. The act of pulling a camel through the eye of a needle was re-enacted on this trip, with Ralph Merten acting as the "camel" and the "Keyhole" filling in as the "eye of the needle." Since Trudie had relinquished her task of rounding up the strays, one climber went awry. Bob Bear went out and got his man, but being we are a modern organization, the rescue was made with the Bear's jeep.

Looking forward, we are planning a business meeting on March 15th at Club headquarters (7:30 PM). We will vote on three proposed peaks for the list: Guadalupe and Maturango, nominated at the Annual Meeting, and Orocopia, proposed by Harry Melts in this communication.

Of considerable importance to many of our members in the suggestion to transfer emblem status from New York Butte to another summit, possibly Mt. Inyo. With the easy jeep access to New York Butte, it is felt that another peak should be substituted.

Our Vice Chairman, Harry Melts, will discuss coming schedules. He has some excellent ideas, including that of a joint trip with the San Diego Chapter. Undoubtedly, that group has a great store of knowledge on the Baja California regions which it could share with our Desert Peakers. He is also planning on a Saturday climb for the benefit of those who have other obligations on Sunday. Harry is open to suggestions on new types of trips, but does want to put the emphasis on Emblems and Qualifying Peaks. So bring in requests for any trip that you would like to lead or attend. Bob Greenawalt will close the meeting with his slides.

Since our last Newsletter, we have been blessed with three new members:

Dan Cummings
Bill Utterback
Fergil Lewis

H. Jay Davis made a mid-winter climb of Mt. Montgomery on Dec 20th, earning his emblem on this worthy peak.

During the spring meeting of 1959, the possibility of a membership card for those achieving membership was discussed, and a committee appointed to look into this matter. After some discussion, both by the committee and your officers, it was decided that all of our
