raine snout. It is small and its greatest dimension probably does not exceed 2,000 feet. But it is of more than usual interest, as it is probably the only true glacier in the entire Great Basin. Also it is unique in having lain unknown and unsuspected in its well-guarded, hidden cirque since white man first came to the region a century ago. I would like to propose that this ice body on Wheeler Peak be named the Matthes Glacier. Francois Emile Matthes (1874-1948) was one of America's distinguished geologists and a leading world authority on glaciers."

DESERT PROTECTIVE COUNCIL
This is an organization recently formed, whose purpose is to "safeguard for wise and reverent use by this and succeeding generations those desert areas that are of unique scenic, scientific, historical, spiritual and recreational value."
Active membership is open to all adults interested in the purposes of the Council. Annual dues are $1.00 or more a year.
Harry C. James, President of the Council, invites all members of the DPS to help support and participate in the conservation activities of the Council. Address: Harry C. James, Lolomi Lodge, Banning, California.
Incidentally, you will enjoy reading EL PAISANO, the newsletter of the Council, edited by Mr. James, which is issued with "considerable irregularity" (just like the DPS NEWSLETTER -- no deadlines!).
Harry says a meeting of the Council is scheduled for Sunday, December 4th, at Salton Sea State Park. Future meetings wi11 be held March 4 at Borrego and May 6 at Hidden Valley. The meeting follows a picnic lunch at noon. DPS members are welcome.
Harry also wishes to make a correction in his State Park recommendations which appeared in the last DPS NEWSLETTER. The old mining town of Aurora should not have been included with Bodie. It belongs to Nevada.

SOME GOOD READING
We'd like to recommend a very delightful new book entitled. "The Voice of the Desert: A Naturalist's Interpretation," by Joseph Wood Krutch. It will help you to understand better the creatures and plant-life of our southwest desert areas as you share in the keen observations and philosophy of the author.

Be seeing you at the meeting on December 16th.

Sincere1y,
Parker
