SECRET CHAPTER AWARDS
(CONTINUED) Last month I wrote something discussing Ron Jones, Randy
Danta and Doug Mantle receiving National Awards (at least as described in
Sierra Magazine) but the lack of recognition of these guys at the awards
banquet. Apparently nothing appeared in the written banquet program and no
mention was made of their awards during the banquet itself Recognition and free
food will be given the awardees at the Sierra Peaks Banquet.
Dear
John:
I was sorry to read in the Desert SAGE that Ron, Randy and Doug
were apparently left out of the National Awards Banquet.
I attended
many of these Banquets when I was Council delegate (1985-86-87) and Chapter
Chair (1988 & 1989). My recollection is that the program always listed the
title of every award that is given (and maybe the purpose), because I remember
writing down the names of some of the winners next to their awards. I also
remember that there were quite a few times when awards were accepted by the
Chapter Chair or Council delegate on behalf of some member of their chapter who
couldn't make it to San Francisco. The accomplishments of the awardees were
also always described, whether they were there in person or not.
The
expert on the whole process is Elden Hughes, who served on the National awards
Committee. I think he was even Chair of it starting around 1989.
Thanks
for writing it up and giving Ron, Randy, and Doug the recognition they
deserve.

DOGS, DOGS and MORE DOGS by lots of
people On May 5, 1994 Bob Hicks, the chairman of the safety
committee sent the following letter to the chairpersons of the HPS and the
DPS.
To: |
David Eisenberg, HPS Chair Patty Kline, DPS
Chair |
Dear Chairs:
The Safety committee met
on April 27 and one of the subjects discussed was dogs being allowed on
outings.
It is evident from the reports received that some Outings
sponsored by your section have included dogs even though the original
announcement of the outing did not state that dogs would be allowed on the
outing.
This of course is in violation of Chapter policy. Please take
steps to assure that leaders do not permit dogs on outings that have not been
so advertised.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Bob Hicks,
Chairman Safety Committee
Dave Eisenberg, then wrote the following
in the July-August HPS LOOKOUT.
Sierra Club Rules I was hoping that this
would not happen this year. The HPS has been censured by the Safety Committee.
Complaints have been made regarding the presence of dogs on Sierra Club hikes.
According to Sierra Club rules, the hike must be listed as a K-9 hike before
dogs are allowed. Please list your hikes as K-9 hikes if you are planning to
bring your dog on a trip you are leading or wish to allow dogs. This will give
people with allergies, etc. a chance to stay away. If you are a participant,
please do not impose on the goodwill of the leaders by showing up on a regular
hike with dogs. It places the leaders in a bad position. They can lose their
leader rating by allowing you to come or your friendship by turning you down.
Note: Outings include events such as meeting, car camps, and Oktoberfest. --
