I want to thank the Ridgecrest office of the BLM for helping and supporting over the years the opening up of the old Inyo trails, for the Friends of the Inyos and the Desert Survivors for doing a lot of exploration, to Tom Budlong in particular for devoting so much time in careful mapping and description of the trails (I hope he is writing a Guide to the Inyos) and especially to the DPS's own Steve Smith, BLM Ranger, who organized and spearheaded the ongoing effort at locating and popularizing the Inyo trails. For anyone who is interested I carried my video camera the entire trip and have a 2-1/2 hour amateur video of our 8 day trip which is available from me at my cost of about $15.00. I am certain that ours was the first hike to ever cover all these trails, either in pieces or especially in one single trip which explored this much history and geography of the Inyos.
I plan to repeat a good part of this hike in the spring of 1995 on a scheduled Sierra Club trip. Join us if you are interested. HAPPY TRAILS - RON

DPS ROADHEAD AND CLIMBING INDEX
by RON JONES

I first indexed road head and climbing information from the DESERT SAGE in SAGE #153 of March-April 1980 which covered climbs back to 1963. I corrected and updated this information in SAGE #170 of August-October 1983. I last indexed, at the end of 1986, the roadhead and climbing information for peak writeups in the DESERT SAGE and this appeared in SAGE #188 in 1987. Most of this information was soon superseded by Randy Bernard's DPS Road & Peak Guide issued in 1988. This guide went through a second edition before Dave Jurasevich took over as Editor and issued a third edition in 1991. A 4th edition may soon be forthcoming. We trust that the new edition will not live up to Wes Shelbergs poem:

When the DPS route (GUIDE) was part new the report said much that was new and was true but that which was new was not very true and that which was true was not very new. Wes Shelberg - 1988

The DPS Road & Peak Guide only covers peaks on the DPS list and so I am now updating my index to cover significant road or climbing instructions for UNLISTED Desert Peaks from 1975 to SAGE # 232 (July 1994), as well as suggested changes and possible corrections to the Road and Peak Guide from 1991 when the 3rd edition appeared (PEAKS IN CAPS), to the present. I have omitted many interesting
writeups when they seemed not to include significant route information. There may be writeups which I have over looked, and for these unintentional omissions I apologize. Please send any corrections and additions to:

The index is alphabetical by peak name followed by the issue of the SAGE with the write-up. Example: Blue bottle Pk: route information appears in SAGE issues #129. #187, #197. If a trip has not been written up since January 1975, I have given its last citation before 1975. As a reference, issues of the SAGE cover the following years (1985 has two # 180s, 180a in September and 180b in October. A "bogus" DESERT RAGE was issued in August 1983.
