The Desert Sage
MARCH 994 **Our 52nd Season** 230

DESERT VISIONS by PATTY KLINE

When I wrote my last Desert Visions. Dale Van Dalsem was still alive. I was shocked and deeply saddened by his sudden death on January 8. 1994. As I am sure on all know now. he was mountain biking in the Santa Monica Mountains one Saturday morning when he suffered a fatal heart attack. Dale's spirit lives on in our minds.
There are 3 memorial outings being led this Spring for Dale. The first one is Moapa Peak and Virgin Peak on April 30-May 1st. This was originally written up by Dale for the Schedule. He had asked Dave Petzold to be his assistant. Dave will now lead it and Carolyn West will assist. The "world class campfire" in Dale's works will be a true world class campfire. The next memorial outing originally submitted by Dale is on May 7-8: Needle Peak. Manly Peak and Porter Peak. Greg Roach will take Dale's place as leader and Mirna Roach will substitute for Fred Camphausen. The third memorial outing in Dale's honor is the Memorial Day Weekend trip May 28-30 of Mt Tipton. Humphreys Peak (the high point of Arizona), and Navaho Mountain. Dave Petzold will again take Dale's place as leader with Carolyn West assisting. It should be a great trip.
At the last Management Committee Meeting ii was decided to make guards for List Finish pins saying 2x for our double List Finishers. This attractive pin is engraved and letters are enameled. Bill T. Russell has a nice one and knows of a shop that will make them up for a fee. It is Carr's Trophy and Engraving on Pico Blvd. near Sepulveda. Your double or (triple) List Finishers can custom order one.
As of February 1. 1994 the Sierra Club has moved its membership processing center to Boulder. Colorado. Any new members joining the Sierra Club who want to give part of the initial dues back to the DPS from the National will no longer be using the FRIP (Field Recruitment Incentive Program Number assigned to the DPS (748) but the new Organization Entity Code number of 1451.
Our meeting place for April will again be in the Los Angeles Room behind the cafeteria. This is a very nice meeting room.
In closing I would like to do a quote from a Navajo tradition called "Dawn Boy's Song in Entering the White House". which ties in with Dale's memorial outing to Navajo Country May 28-30.

In the house of long life, there I wander.
In the house of happiness, there I wander.
Beauty before me. with it. I wander.
Beauty behind me. with it. I wander.
Beauty below me. with it I wander.
Beauty above em. with it I wander.
Beauty all around me. with it I wander.
In old age traveling, with it I wander.
On the beautiful trail I am. with it I wander.
