SIERRA CLUB DESERT PEAKS NEWSLETTER #52 - 7 NOVEMBER 7, 1952 |

Dear Desert
Peaker: At long last your management committee has been able to review, prepare, and submit some proposed changes to the By-Laws of the D.P.S. Lloyd and Rosie Balsam have performed a difficult task in collating the discussed changes in the By-Laws and putting them into a form suitable for your study. Copies of the proposed change's in the By-Laws accompany this newsletter - if you are a D.P.S. member. The changes will be voted upon this winter - so keep this information available. If you have misplaced your old copy of the By-Laws, write to your secretary, Rosemarie Balsam, who will send another copy on request. Parker Severson, chairman of the mountaineering committee of the D.P.S, has prepared several more pages with the aid of his committee, for the Desert Peaks Guide. You may procure your copies by writing to Parker and enclosing 15 cents in coin to handle mailing and printing costs. Specimen copies of the new pages will be available for review at the Annual Banquet on November 8th. There are two trips to report upon in this issue of the D.P.S. Newsletter: November 1st and 2nd. A last minute change in plans switched the locale of the trip from the Eagle Crags to Trona and Argus Peak, which was the first scheduled climb of the D.P.S. to this mountain. After meeting at Randsburg on Saturday morning, a short hike was taken up Red Mt., near Randsburg. In the afternoon, the group gathered at Valley Wells for a swim, and established camp in the recreational area. On Sunday morning, Argus Peak was negotiated after about 3 hours of boulder scrambling - in clear, beautiful, ideal climbing weather. A superb view was afforded from this peak, bordering on the Naval Ordnance Test Range. Among those making the climb were leaders Polly Connable and Art Lembeck, Lloyd Balsam, Alden Hilton, Frank and Ruth Ferro, Ken Rich, Margie and Bill Henderson, Lee Owings, Nelson Nies, and others making a total of eighteen. October 4th and 5th. A turnout of about twenty-four found a weekend at Waucoba most enjoyable. The camp site was reached early on Saturday afternoon, and while a few went exploring, others picked pinon nuts which abounded in nearby trees. On Sunday morning, led by John Delmonte, the group comprising Jocelyn and Judith Delmonte, Frederic Bankerd, Ruth and Wayne McCartney, Stanton Smith, Frank Sanborn, Dick Woodward, Ken and Kerry Rich, Dick Kenyon, Bob Schmelzer, Bernice and Walt Heninger, Margaret Sosnowaki, Ed Plante, Jim Moore and Larry Ames, negotiated Waucoba Peak. Outside of a geological survey party, the peak had not been climbed for three years. The weather was superb, particularly the panorama of the Sierra Nevadas across the valley. Fred Bankerd, taking the place of Gene Ramstadt, served as assistant leader on this trip. |
