Desert Visions
by Patty Kline

I am happy to inform you that the Management Committee is considering creating a membership category for Honorary Members. We have one member who is 92 years old, Louise Werner. She has been a member for over 40 years. Fred Johnson has been a member for over 50 years, joining at 14 years of age. Fred still hikes with us sometimes. It would be nice to honor these 2 members. Both the HPS and the SPS have an honorary membership category. This question will appear on your DPS ballot.
For January, February and March our meeting place will be temporarily changed to the Los Angeles Room, which is located behind the Cafeteria at DWP. The reason for this change is other people need our rooms in front of the Cafeteria. These people were displaced out of the 5th floor because of night remodeling.
Edward Abbey is one of my favorite authors known for his desert writing. Here is a quote from his "Come on In" in The Journey Home: Some Words in Defense of the American West. "For us the wilderness and human emptiness of this land is not a source of fear but the greatest of its attractions. We would guard and defend and save it as a place for all who wish to rediscover the nearly lost pleasures of adventure, adventure not only in the physical, but also mental, spiritual, moral, aesthetic and intellectual adventure. A place for the free. Come on in. The earth, like the sun, belongs to everyone and to no one."
Another one of my favorite desert authors is Ron Jones, our SAGE Editor. This is his last issue. I have always enjoyed reading his SAGE's from cover to cover. A big thanks from all of us to Ron. Ron, you have done a great job as Editor. Thank you again for all you have done.
