began to encounter an ever more challenging route requiring some significant descents to the right and then left of the ridgetop. The latter involved a 5th class descent. It was by now fairly obvious we had gone too tar. John and Jack were in the mood for some rock climbing and went on to the final peak at the north end of the ridges where they confirmed there was no register.

Mary Ann and I began working our way back south and before long found the "step across" to the slanting summit block and the register! Getting there turned out to be anticlimactic after our off route climbing, hut we were delighted to find the summit and called out the news to the others, who came back and joined us there. It was about 1445. As we left the summit boulders we were greeted by the perro amable. who was delighted by our return. The hike back to Rancho San Luis was pleasant, but uneventful, and we were at the rancho by 3:30. We said goodbye to the dog, who had been a pleasant companion all day. then began the long drive home, arriving in Simi Valley near midnight.
