DPS BANQUET 5 MAY, 1993

The Desert Peaks Section celebrated another outstanding year of climbing and camaraderie at the annual DPS Banquet held In a private room in the Taix restaurant in Los Angeles on the 5th of May, 1993. Over 90 people attended. A job well done by Banquet Chair Frank Dobos and decorating committee Betsy Lutz. We all visited and caught up during our happy hour (6-7:30) and enjoyed a display of our entire DPS records, brought by Archivist Bill T. Russell. John McCully, our current DPS Chair, started the ceremonies with a special validation for our leaders, emblem holders, list finisher and double and triple list finishers. It's been a record year with 60-70 trips being led, fourteen new emblem holders and ten new list finishers (including one double list finisher and one triple list finisher!!) Then thanks was given to all those who have worked hard this last year to make our section so successful. A special thanks to our Sage editor, Ron Jones, and to Randy Bernard and Dave Jurasevich for their work on the very successful Peaks Guide book.
Many thanks to our outgoing Management Committee members:

Frank Dobos, Banquet Chair, then conducted the drawing for the door prizes. Paula Peterson won a book "A Hundred Hikes in the Alps" and Carol Breyde Hubbard won a book "Poisonous Plants of California". Henry Heusinkveld received the book "Mountaineering and its Literature". New DPS T-shirts were won by Dan Richter, Peter Doggett, Bob Hicks, George Hubbard and Sue Wyman. We had a break at this point and an opportunity to purchase one of our brand new DPS T-shirts with original design by Anna Valkass. The very beautiful programs were also done by Anna. A very big thanks Anna for all your beautiful art work.
John then introduced the main speaker, Graham Mackintosh, winner of the ""Adventurous Traveler of the Year award and author of "INTO A DESERT PLACE - a 3,000 Mile Walk Around the Coast of Baja, California". Graham entertained us with humor and stones and a slide show of his famous walk in which he survived totally off the land and sea, his only companion a large white burro. Afterwards, Mr. Mackintosh answered our questions and autographed many, many copies of his book. A good time was had by all.
