Lack of interest, apathy, age and the economy have taken their toll during 1992-93 as the DPS membership nose-dived by 41 members from 271 to 230 members. This was calculated by comparing the membership rolls from May 1, 1992 to the same date in 1993. Several long time members failed to renew or are no longer with us.
Past Chair John McCully states, I can't understand it. Our outings program has been great, our meetings have been good, some people told me this year's banquet was the best ever and the SAGE has been real good. I can't understand it.
Among the list finishers, Gene Olsen passed away and Paul Freiman, Jon Inskeep, John McDermott and Eric Schumacher failed to renew or are late renewals. Eleven emblem holders from last year did not renew. Wendy Ruess passed away and Lew Amack, Geoff Godfrey, Bill Gray, Sherry Harsh, Keats Hayden, Jon L., Mike & Wendy Inskeep, Ed Lubin, Dan Sherman and Ramon Wolfe chose not to continue their membership.
SAGE Editor, Ron Jones, says he senses a lack of enthusiasm in the Section. He personally felt that adding some new peaks to the List this year might revitalize this interest but the membership resoundingly defeated this idea in favor of the status quo. What lies in the future for the DPS?
Desert Peaks Section bylaws, amended in April 1992, show that DPS members must maintain membership in the Sierra Club and subscribe to the Section newsletter. Membership and subscriptions expire and are due December 1 of each year and become delinquent after the March DPS meeting.
