COUNCIL REP REPORT . . .

Questions on Backpacks, Safety and Ratings

The Safety Committee has recommended that leaders of backpacks which last overnight be required to hold an "I" rating. This stems from a concern about safety for participants who venture beyond easy reach of normally available emergency aid.

The Council felt that the implementation of this extra requirement would adversely affect the amount of new people aspiring to become leaders, particularly since the requirements for "I" rating have increased to include the wilderness first aid course and Environmental Awareness Training.

Without sufficient reason being presented for the necessity of this change, the council voted to communicate that "Council would not like to make any changes in criteria or training requirements at this time unless LTC/Safety can present more evidence for a need for change."

Randy Danta from the Safety Committee is expected to address the council on his views of this issue at the next Council Meeting.

TREASURER' S REPORT

For the period of 01/01/93 thru 02/24/93, the DPS had income of $1312.90 and expenses of $1250.28, for an ending balance of $3016.02.

A new budget has been submitted to the Management Committee. There is a proposal to change the budget from a calendar year to a year which matches the DPS season. When the details are resolved and the budget approved, a copy will be printed in the Sage. The DPS is in a cash favorable position.

In January, we were out of stock of the third edition of the Road and Peak Guide. With a recent reprinting, supplies are abundant.

Don't forget about other DPS merchandise, which is for sale. The following can be obtained for a reasonable price: DPS Peak Lists, Sweat Shirts, Emblem and List Finisher Pins, and Patches. For pricing and ordering information, see the DPS Merchandise Order Form on the back of the Sage.
