SAGE REMEMBRANCES #6

LIST FINISHERS

Since early 1947, the DPS culture has recognized emblem status. For example, the bylaws name the emblem peaks and the requirement to climb 15 peaks. Since about 1957, membership lists published in the SAGE have identified those who are emblem holders. In contrast, list finisher (LF) status was not covered in the bylaws until 1989 and there is still no mention of multiple list finishers. I have found no records of list finishers in the archives nor in the SAGE before #123 (Jul 74) where Dick Akawie is listed as LF # 7. Presumably any earlier records were not saved, or more likely, there were no records and DPSers just remembered the individual achievements. The present listing starts with Andy Smatko who finished on Arc Dome in Sep 1963 after five attempts. At that time there were 58 peaks on the list. Individual finishers have been identified in the SAGE since the listing of Akawie in 1974 and recent membership lists identify the list finishers.
In the late 1970's, Mike Manchester designed the LF pin and had it manufactured on his own initiative. Sometime later the DPS Management Committee adopted it officially.
Initially the DPS list consisted of seven peaks and membership was achieved by climbing all of them. Therefore the first twelve members, through 12/46, were LFs when they joined the Section (see Sage Rembrances in SAGES 220, 214, 213). I have been told that there were others who finished the list before 1963; in particular, John Robinson told me that he had done so. It seems impossible to now discover the facts about such early list finishers.
The first list of LFs was published in SAGE 139 (May 77). It was probably prepared by Mike Manchester who had been Secretary during the preceding year. SAGE 189 (Mar 87) contains a list with errors and there were updates in SAGES 191 and 209. The list of first time lfs given below is a further update. Although not given here, the data in my computer includes the name of the peak, the day date of the climb and the SAGE issue in which the status is recognized.
In 1983, Doug Mantle finished the list for the second time (2x). He was a solitary for seven years until Barbara Reber became #2 and now that list is growing. Doug took the lead again this month when he became the first 3xLFT The interest and activity in 2x list finishings prompts at least two questions. First, Is it proper to drive to a trailhead and climb a peak twice in the same day or should one make a separate trip to claim a second climb? Second, when peaks are added to the list after a 1 xLF, is it expected that these new peaks be climbed twice before claiming a 2xLF?
The DPS is the senior of the three peak bagging sections and therefore it seems proper to recognize here the sixteen triple list finishers, those who have finished all three lists one or more times. The DPS has 78 first time finishers, the HPS has about 170 and the SPS has 38. Doug Mantle is exceptional in being a 3x triple LF! There are several people who are close to being triple list finishers, most notably Ron Jones who needs only three SPS peaks but who is holding off until 2003 so that he can be the oldest SPSer at the time of finishing.
