The Desert Sage

THE VIEW FROM WALNUT AVE
My thanks to Patty Kline and the DPS leaders for putting together a great schedule of outings for the upcoming desert season. Patty is still taking late trips and moving trips from congested week-ends. We will see her completed schedule with the September issue of the SAGE. I did want to thank everyone who is keeping the ball rolling on leading exploratories for newly proposed additions to our Peak List. Ron Jones & I are leading a backpack from Clark Dry Lake in the south to Toro Pk on 11/7-8. Other new exploratories include South Park Pk over Thanksgiving by the Mamedalins & Valkass and a reassessment of formerly listed Clipper & Marble by the same team on 1/16-17.
Leads of already proposed peaks include Mormon on 11/21-22 by Steve Smith & Campy; a Sugarloaf backpack on 11/26-29 by Maris & the Mamedalins; and Needle Eye & Mohave by Maris & me on 1/30-31. You all come on these climbs and help judge these new peaks.
The only other proposed peaks that need leading are Saline Mtn and Providence Pt. These peaks can still be put in the schedule with a write-up in a future SAGE. Contact Patty for help.-- John Mc.

Canyon Resources Corporation is an international mining company, based in Golden Colorado, whose business is the exploration, acquisition, production & sale of precious & base metals & industrial minerals, primarily in the western States & the Dominican Republic. It went public in 1986 & in 1991 the company doubled its total gold assets to more than 3 million ounces, gold production to 57,000 ounces, & revenues to $22 million from the previous year & was selected as one of the top 100 fastest growing public companies in America.
It now proposes to develop and operate its Briggs Project south of Ballarat near Redlands Canyon in the southern Panamint Range. This large 550 acre open pit mine will lie west of Manly & Needle Pks. It is estimated that they would move 44,300,000 tons of rock to mine nearly 18 million tons of ore containing about 3 one hundredths of an ounce of gold per ton.
They hope to generate three megawatts of electric power thru diesel powered generators, they propose 4 water ponds for operation and ground-water wells on or near the site to supply process water.
