RECOMMENDED ADDITION LIST

The DPS Management Committee has created a list of peaks that are recommended for addition to the DPS list next year, on the March 1993 ballot. The Committee has decided to wait a year before asking the Section to vote on the recommended additions, so that we have a full year to hike and explore these peaks. During the coming year more peaks may be added to this list. If this experiment in having peak additions "wait" a year before voting proves successful then the committee may consider changing the by laws to require a peak to be considered for a year prior to being submitted to a vote.

The initial Recommended Additions List consists of seven peaks. In years gone by some peaks have been rejected because getting to the trailhead in an ordinary vehicle was difficult or impossible. Quite a few people in the DPS now have 4WD vehicles and difficult access might now be considered acceptable (or even an attraction) for adding a good peak on the list.

The information below is very sketchy and parts of it may be incorrect. Further information may be available by contacting the person who originally recommended the peak. -- John McCully

Sugarloaf - 4623, on Wingate Wash (15) or Wingate Wash West (7 1/2). Eight and 1/2 miles East of Needle Peak. The two currently known routes (from the NE and S) are each over 20 miles round trip and have 4,000+ gains. Apparently reliable water at 2300 on, NE route, and would make a nice backpack. Some possibility of finding a shorter route using 4WD vehicles. Recommended by Ron Jones.

Mormon - 7200+, on ROX NE (7 1/2, Nevada). Near Moapa. Led several times in the last few years, 30 mile drive on a sandy dirt road. About 3,000 feet of gain. Pairs well with Moapa. Suggested by George Hubbard, Maris Valkass, Doug Mantle and others.

Providence Point - 6,612. Not named on Flynn (15 minute) but led several times by DPS under the name Foshay Peak. Eight miles South of Edgar (previously called Providence). Named Providence Point on the new 7 1/2 minute map, Van Winkle Spring. Led from the East (2,700 feet of gain) in January 1992. Appears to have a route with 2350 gain from the West. Suggested by Dale Van Dalsem.

Mt Moriah - 12,067. About 200 miles North of Las Vegas. Being led this July by Vicky Hoover from San Francisco. It has been remarked that it is a very beautiful peak and is near Wheeler Peak. Suggested by Vicky Hoover.

Saline - 7063 on Dry Mountain (15). 3400 feet of gain and 10 mile round trip from the East. About 7 miles North East from Saline Hot Springs on a road that is most easily done with 4WD but which has been done in 2WD with careful driving. Not named on 1957 15 minute Dry Mountain quad but is named on BLM map. Recommended by Steve Smith.

Mohave - In the Trigo Mountains about 20 miles South of Blythe. Last led over Thanksgiving 1986, with over 20 people in group. 15 mile round trip with perhaps 2,000 feet of gain. Pairs with Needle Eye (below) Recommended by Ron Jones and Maris Valkass.

Needle Eye - About a 10 mile round trip with perhaps 2,000 feet of gain. Done from the same base camp as Mohave, with which it could be paired on a weekend. Recommended by Maris Valkass and Ron Jones.
