Some of the humor of those times comes out in desperate and clever getaway sequences, which might even be worthy of filming in modern entertainment style, perhaps cast with Dustin Hoffman. "Flat Nose grabbed the jailer's gun and shot once, (this was in Deadwood, S.D.) and O'Day and Putriey got scared, which dulled the edge of their decision. After locking the jailer's wife in the cell with him, to keep her from turning in the alarm, they took off. O'Day and Putney were picked up almost immediately, but the rest were made of sterner stuff. Flat Nose, Longabaugh and Speck came to a rancher's house where they stole a pair of big, awkward Clydesdale mares that couldn't strike a lope--all they could do was trot. Just after dark, after riding a couple hours with no saddles and only the blind work bridles, they came to a bridge guarded by a sheriff's posse. There was nothing they could do but trot right onto the bridge, and that is what they did, so boldly that the posse thought it must be the farmer and his hired man with the farmer's son behind him on the mare. Speck was a small man and was riding behind Longabaugh."
Hats worm by the Bunch (and near-Bunch) were sometimes not all black. "Tom and Matt (Tom McCarty (there are a total of eight McCartys in the Wild Bunch sagas) and Matt Warner] drifted over to Star Valley, on the border of Utah and Wyoming. Late fall snows caught them there and ... They hadn't been, there long when they discovered that some of the families, unable to go out for food and lacking the money to get it even if they had been able to leave, were starving. There was a small store in the valley, but the storekeeper wouldn't extend credit. Finally Matt and Tom, seeing their friends in want, laid down the law to the storekeeper and forced him to give the people food for half price, which they paid form with some of their robbery money. This put them in the social swim in a big way, and Matt met a girl, Rose Morgan." Matt and Rose, along with Tom and his new girl friend, Sary Lemberg, waited until the snow had melted enough so they could go over the mountain to Montpelier. "The move was so open that no one noticed them in Montpelier as they drove, into town and were married in the court house. They sheriff was out of town, he had gone to Star Valley by another road to capture Tom and Matt. When he returned to Montpelier, the newlyweds were long gone on a horseback honeymoon all over the West." After several unlucky attempts at going straight, Matt did finally succeed (tragically, Rose had died of cancer), and he ultimately became the Marshall of Price, Utah.
