WE GET LETTERS ! ! !
Dear Editor: There are
just too many great sounds of the desert to let them go unrecorded. It is my
dream to make a tape that includes some of them. For instance, who could ever
forget te campfire rendition of "Cinderfella" by Cuno Ranschau? Or Lou
Brecheen's "Shooting of Dan McGrew"? Or Terry Turner's "Summertime"? ALL of the
above! I would welcome suggestions and recorded sounds from all of you
desert rats. On our want list are: The celebration of receiving an Emblem:
Campfire singing and laughter at a list finisher: Critter sounds: coyote howls,
burros braying, ravens, chacalac birds etc; Sounds of cans and bottles being
opened. Any tapes and/or suggestions would be gratefully received and
considered to see if it would fit in the "Sounds of the Desert" tape. You'll
get a copy of the finished product!

Dear Ron:
My campaign for Evelyn has recently been squelched, and I
admit defeat! I received this answer recently from the Washington authorities,
after having inquired as to which the peak's correct name is. Their timely
response well spells out the condition. Long Live Brown Peak! I still prefer
Evelyn, due to its historical nature. Thought you might be interested. I am
also sending a copy to John McCully. Sincerely, |

Dear Ron:
Noticed a
reference to proposing new peaks for the DPS. It has been many decades since I
was the first to lead a new peak. One such was Nelson. Also did Magruder and do
not know how many more. Anyway, here it is: |
THIMBLE PEAK |
This peak is located about a
mile south of Red Pass (at the head of Titus Canyon). Corkscrew has long been
on the list, and is an interesting peak as viewed close up from the Beatty
Highway, but as seen from as far away as Furnace Creek, it is simply nothing.
It is a flattish knoll, whose ridgeline blends into the background of Thimble.
Its only attribute of a showing of good stratum. Here are the figures: Thimble
= 6381 ft., Corkscrew = 5804 ft., Red Pass = 5250 ft. so it is 500 ft higher
than Corkscrew and a 1000+ foot cross-country climb from Red Pass. As seen from
the Valley, it is a sharp Matterhorn looking summit. To climb it, take off
from the pass in a SW direction to the westerly ridge. This is a simple route
to follow. However from the east and south it is almost sheer, and would be
quite steep directly from the north. When I say it is a sharp, definitely the
peak could not hold more than a person, really sharp. For tigers, this peak
may not seem worthwhile. n the other hand, Supt. Ed Rotherfuss of the Park
Service, looked me up for a suggestion for a route. Yes, it is not for a tiger.
On the other hand, if you are driving the Titus canyon road, and many of you
have done so, this would be an interesting jaunt for an excellent
view of Death Valley and the Panamints. --Walt Wheelock |
