Dear Ron, July 19, 1991

Below, review of a book I know you and others will like. Hope your Hawaii trip was a good one--I'll be leaving for almost 3 months In India August 25. Cheers,

A book DPSers WILL LOVE: "NATIVES IN EXILE", by Dirk Herman

A native of Twentynine Palms, Dirk Herman has written a novel about a small desert town located on old highways 95 & 66. His evocative descriptions range tram the Colorado River, the Chemehuevi & Big Maria mountains, to Searchlight, Nevada, and other places familiar to desert peakers. I got this fine book through inter library loan from the San Mateo County Library--a paperback listed at S9.95, you might want to order it from the publisher, Capra Press, P0 box 2068, Santa Barbara 93120. It came out in 1989.

"THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE"
by
Aesop

This is my favorite desert book, mainly because it deals with one of my favorite desert characters - the desert tortoise and his race with the very confident desert jackrabbit to see who is the fastest.
The story is all about the race and the various exciting adventures encountered along the way. I won't tell you any more as it has a surprise ending! This has been a favorite book of mine since I was quite young. --Dean Acheson

"Into A Desert Place" by Graham Mackintosh is my favorite desert book. I suppose that is for three reasons: 1) it is a well written story, 2) it takes place in Baja, and 3) it is all about the desert. Graham walked the circumference of Baja, California and writes about his various adventures, including his acquiring a white burro which became his best friend. Ron and I went to a San Diego Chapter monthly meeting a year ego and met Graham, and listened to him tell his story first hand along with a slide presentation. I recommend this book for any DPSer to read. --Leora Jones
