bears more renown than she is given--EVELYN should be the name of this Desert Peak! Therefore, I soon hope to submit to the DPS Management Committee, that during our next election, we include a ballot measure to officially change this summit's name to EVELYN. I propose that we call this peak, merely EVELYN, without a Peak, Mtn, or other suffix--In honor of Mrs Francis Marion Smith. And I give these reasons in support of EVELYN: 1. The summit is definitely within T & T Domain and looks directly down on its old right of way. It also looks down on the extinct Evelyn Siding. 2. Since Francis Marion Smith is honored with closein-view Smith Mtn, it is fitting to include his wife, as well. 3. All of our female climbers will no doubt agree we need one Desert Peak named for a gracious woman, and certainly EVELYN presents a more warm title than does Big Maria or Old Woman! 4. EVELYN is the name given on the USGS topographic sheet, as does its bench mark atop the summit--having been placed there in 1949. 5. If our long-standing Providence Peak can he changed to Edgar, then it would seem very plausible to have an EVELYN. Do I hear any AYES? This should stir up some future rebuttals. Evelyn Siding was 12+ miles south of Death Valley Jct, as is seen in The T & T RR First District Time Table No. 30 (1927) print. Evelyn's picture is taken from Geo H Hildebrand's book, BORAX PIONEER: FRANCIS MARION SMITH (1982). -Robert 0 Greenawalt March 1991 |
