The Desert Sage
JULY 1991 214
From the Chair

As you have been reminded by recent SAGES and by the last banquet program, this year is the 50th anniversary of the DPS. Your new management committee will focus on our heritage. We hope to re-enlist past members and to hold events that will appeal to old timers. A noteworthy example is the trip to New York Butte, to be led by Ron Jones and Igor Mamedalin on Nov 16- 17, 50 years after the first DPS trip led by Chester Versteeg and Niles Werner on Nov 15-16, 1941.
Our heritage includes exploration and protection of the desert and its mountains and we will continue that effort. Our heritage also includes enjoyable, friendly, memorable outings. For these, we depend upon our leaders; give them lots of support and good strokes. And do become a leader yourself; leading is rewarding.
Please come to our meetings. We especially ask for list finishers to come and to sign the original Membership Roll book that Versteeg initiated. We obtained 27 signatures at the banquet but there are 71 finishers.

ANGELES CHAPTER COUNCIL REPORT

Bighorn SheepThe Council Meeting at the Chapter Headquarters on June 24 was anything but boring.

First the resignation of Ellen Greif, Chapter Administrator for many years, was discussed. The Chapter is looking for a replacement.

The main concern of the evening was a letter sent to Senators Cranston and Seymour about the Desert Protection Act from the Back Road Explorers (BRE). The BRE sent this on their own without consulting the Sierra Club. The letter implied a lot of criticism of the Sierra Club policy. It didn't agree with what the club stood for and made it look like the Sierra Club didn't support the Desert Protection Act. For this the council voted 7 to 2 to have the Executive Committee of the Angeles Chapter to appoint new officers for the BRE. Voices got strained and either side succeeded in staying calm enough to discuss things. The Backroad Explorers was suspended a couple of year's ago so this isn't new to them.

Robin Ives, Council Chair, adjourned the meeting at 9:30pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Patty Kline
