Dear DPS Secretary:

I have recently returned from a trip to Eastern Nevada, to Great Basin National Park and the Mt. Moriah Wilderness, a short distance north of Great Basin N.P. and also part of the Snake Range. We climbed Mt. Moriah, (12,067) high point of this new wilderness area, and found it a most interesting and worthwhile peak. I would hereby like to nominate it for addition to the DPS peak list.

REASONS:
It is far enough from Wheeler Peak to be a truly dominating peak in its own area, yet close enough to be a second objective on a trip to Wheeler Peak. It has a good view of Wheeler Peak, the Schell Range, Deep Creek Range, and many other points in eastern Nevada and in Utah.

Centrally placed in a newly designated wilderness area, it has an excellent feeling of remoteness. It can be reached from various routes, from west, northeast, and southeast, at the least. We backpacked up the impressive canyon of Hendrys Creek drainage, from southeast, and found this lush, year-round riparian area extremely enjoyable for its own sake. It offers good campsites and sources of water. True, some cattle may be encountered, but this is a minor obstacle.

There are interesting groves of ancient bristlecone pine on its flanks, as well as an exceptional plateau area, known as the Table, to the northeast.

The scenery, remoteness, height, and vegetation all combine to make it a splendid destination.

I hope DPS will consider Mt. Moriah for the DPS list. Please let me know if you wish further details. Marge Sill, Toiyabe Chapter conservation chair, can also give you more particulars.

Sincerely,
Vicky Hoover
Vicky Hoover, DPS
