THE ANNUAL DPS BANQUET
May 2, 1990
Lawry's California Center, Los Angeles

The Desert Peaks Section celebrated the completion of 49 years of climbing in the Angeles Chapter. Either timing, location, program or a combination of these things made for what many people stated was the best DPS banquet they had ever attended. The gala event attracted over 100 Section members and guests. On a delightfully warm Wednesday evening, we gathered in a secluded outdoor patio specially designated for our evening. After margaritas, chips and (of course) Lawry's salsa, and much socializing we all had the opportunity to vote for our favorite color and black and white photo. Jim Kilberg gets a heavy handed pat on the back for a superb job in soliciting and displaying the more than 60 photos brought for exhibition to our banquet.

A lot of catching up on peaks climbed, locations visited and future adventures were being discussed throughout the patio. Dinner was buffet style featuring (but what else) Mexican food of what fared "average" quality. Cinco de Mayo decor was seen in every direction and mariachis could be heard in the not so near distance. Toward the end of dinner, Ron Jones, in typical style, sold a record number of raffle tickets before the program began.

Dale Van Dalsem, as outgoing Chair, presided over dinner and the recaps of the climbing season at the beginning of the evening's program. He highlighted the Section's participation in the on-going struggle for the California Desert Bill. He thanked his outgoing Management Committee (of Terry Turner, Marti Washbourne, Rick Beatty, Jim Kilberg, Ron Jones and Anna and Maris Valkass) and introduced Terry Turner, Chairperson for the 1990-1991 climbing year, the golden 50th anniversary of DPS outings for the Angeles Chapter.

Terry introduced her new Committee for the coming year and spoke briefly on the optimistic hopes for the California and southwestern deserts. She turned the program over to Ron Jones, the banquet chair, who presided over the awarding of numerous door and raffle prizes to the attendees. Special mention here of all participants and winners:
