PRIVATE TRIPS Big Picacho -- April 1990 -- J. Holshuh |
||
This inscription was found on a metal plaque on the summit rock of Picacho del Diablo during a trip in April, 1990. I don't know how long it might have been there as other climbers I have talked to who have summitted the peak more than once in the recent years do not remember seeing it. I may have miscopied one portion of it and would like it to be corrected if possible. Also I am very curious who this person was. I think the plaque was probably placed by the Club Alpinista of Tijuana or Ensenada as some such group seems to have organized the peak register. (Editor: I have heard that all the old registers were removed from the north summit. I have many early original registers, shredded, rotting and tattered, covering 1967 to 1981. Now, all you historians, should I replace those scraps on my CMC climb later this year? How they came into my possesion is a story I will tell another time. I hope the fine registers (with N. Clyde's signature) still remain on the south summit. --R. Jones) |

Approximate Translation | ||
You tell me then that I must perish Just as the flowers that I planted will die Will nothing remain of my name Will no-one remember my fame? But the gardens that I planted are young and growing... The songs that I sang will continue being sung. A Mexican Indian language? The roads and the days end here. |

We estimated this hike at two days, but three proved to be necessary. We used the fancy map (Centra Publications at 4705 Laurel Street, San Diego, CA 92015, probably $5), John Robinson's book Camping and Climbing in Baha, and the AAA Baja map to figure out our route. |
