The Desert Sage
Vic & Sue finished the list on Mopah Oct 21 & the 40 or so attendees enjoyed one of the best DPS weekends ever. Almost-perfect weather (a few sprinkles Sat. A.M.), great music & singing around a roaring fire, with good food & refreshments & conversation & camaraderie, then Stepladder on Sunday. We're reminded that the people and the process are more important than the peaks!
We've adopted the same ad policy as the Echo: Private trip announcements $1.00 for the first 4 lines, $1.00 per additional line. Other ads $1/line; $25/half page. This includes the Babo trip advertised in the last Sage.
We've been reminded of the animal policy stated on page 20 of the Schedule: "Animals are prohibited unless a specific exception is included in the trip writeup". You love your dog; I love your dog, the trip leader loves your dog, but we've got to go by the rules. Dogs trip climbers, knock rocks, harass local fauna, and get into cactus.
Congressional Hearings are being held locally on the Desert Protection Act. By the time you read this, they will have been held in Bishop in late October, and in Barstow November 11th. What, you missed them? You'll have one more chance, in Los Angeles in January; watch the Southern Sierran for date, time, & place.
ALL OF US WHO CARE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DESERT SHOULD ATTEND THESE HEARINGS!! Go; listen; give YOUR opinions, pro Or con. It's OUR desert!
This is our 14th month without mountaineering insurance for roped & ice-axe climbs. It appalls me that the Sierra Club still does not require signed waivers for all outings. People get injured & killed on unroped class 2 & 3 climbs, too. Do we have to have our unsurance company lose another million in claims & cancel ALL our insurance before SOMEONE wakes up??
GROPe is founding a new mountaineering club to handle those climbs that we can't run in the Sierra Club. Organizational meetings Nov 15th & Dec 20, both at 7:30 P.M. The Gang Of Eight (who just happened to be the only 8 erstwhile climbers not on a trip Oct 28) have promised a dazzling slate of outings. Name will be chosen; everyone has their pet name: Angeles Mountaineers, Polemonium Club, California Mountaineers, Amigos de los Montanas. What's YOURS? Where?: Cal Fed, 270 N Vermont at Beverly.
Next issue: A peak-by-peak analysis of how The Desert Protection Act, as currently written, will affect each of our road-heads!! - Dale
