GET AN ALARM & KILL SWITCH ON YOUR TRUCK & CAR!

In late May I went to a surprise party for Don & Giselle Weiss at Margarita Jones, near USC. Being, cheap, I parked on the street rather that pay a buck or two for valet parking. My '84 Mazda was gone when I got out - it was a surprise party. It was found two days later on the 605 Freeway, minus radio & 4 speakers, locks all punched out and a dinged fender. Had $500 deductible comprehensive insurance. Got most things fixed for $700, so did not bother to file with my insurance company.
On July the 5th, I parked my '80 Toyota 4WD on Pacific on Marina Peninsula at 9:30 P.M. By 10 the truck was gone. It was found two days later, stripped, in Palmdale. I'm still hassling with my insurance company, 20th Century, over what the truck was worth. There's a reason 20th Century sells cheap insurance: they are cheap & slow at paying claims!
In late July, my older son, Bruce, left his Honda Prelude with a valet parking service; they parked it in an alley & it was stolen, then recovered 3 days later, gutted, totaled. It had an alarm; the valet parker didn't activate it!
Terry Rivera Turner's new Nissan 4WD was stolen, then recovered, stripped; I think it was last year.
Moral of the above:
1) Get an alarm, with a kill switch.
2) Leave nothing in plain sight in your vehicle. My bicycle, a Centurian Super LeMans, was in the back of the Toyota, no insurance coverage. A lot of good clothes were in the Mazda in the back seat. No coverage.
3) Know what your policy includes. My cheapo policy with 20th Century covers a big $10/day for 30 days for rental car. Even Rent-a-Wreck won't rent anything for $10/day! Contents coverage is a big $200, except that FOR THEFT IT IS ZERO!
4) Instruct your valet parker on use of your alarm beeper. Hope he understands English.
5) Until you get an alarm, pull the coil wire out when you park anywhere in Metro L.A.
6) The Club, a $60 device that goes on your steering wheel, looked great until I heard on T.V. that one key fits them all!
7) Never have a name-brand F.M/cassette deck in your car. Alpine & Blaupunkt are especially desirable. Camouflage your unit if you have one!

If you've been hit by a car thief, you'll agree that the violation, the agony, the inconvenience, hassle, time, and expense involved are horrendous, even with good, full insurance coverage!!
