WILDERNESS TRAVEL: overnight backpacking skills, cross- country travel, safety, food preparation, campsite selection, minimum impact camping, etc.

NAVIGATION: use of compass, map reading, route selection. dead reckoning, weather forecasting, etc.

BASIC FIRST AID AND CPR: the American Red Cross Standard, Advance, or Instructor first aid course.

ADVANCED FIRST AID AND CPR: The American Red Cross Advanced first aid, mountaineering oriented course, or EMT course.

BASIC ROCK: bouldering techniques, top-rope rock climbing from classes 3 to 5.4, unanchored belays, rappelling, knots, belaying, etc.

INTERMEDIATE ROCK: top rope climbing above class 5.4, anchored belays, artificial anchors, climber rescue, rope handling, additional knots, mechanical rappels, prusicking, etc. ADVANCED ROCK: a "rock-climbing section" course using special tools and techniques.

BASIC SNOW: snow camping (no ice axe or crampons), snow shoes, snow travel of level ground, avalanche awareness, cold weather clothing and gear, etc.

INTERMEDIATE SNOW: snow travel with ice axe (no crampons), ice axe arrests, basic snow anchors, belays in snow, etc., on slopes at or below 34 degrees.

ADVANCE SNOW: snow travel with crampons, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, snow and ice climbing techniques on slopes above 34 degrees, leading snow and ice climbs, etc.

LEADERSHIP: trip administration, legal responsibilities, safety policy, outing policy (Outing Leader's Handbook, pp. 11 and 39).

INSTRUCTION: Curriculum design, student evaluation, awareness of student needs, etc.

The Mountaineering Committee will establish detailed guidelines for training programs based on combinations of the above modules. Club chapters will retain responsibility for actual conduct of training within these guidelines and are free to impose additional requirements.

2.3.1 Participant Training

A participant training course or courses must consist of combinations of one ore more of the climbing skill modules, excluding the instructor skill modules.

2.3.2 Leader Training

Leader training seeks to develop a person's technical and psychological skills (relating to group dynamics). This is accomplished through lectures, field practice, and leading a group under supervision. A leader training course or courses must consist of combinations of one or more of the various climbing skill modules, including the leadership skills module.
