BLM ANNOUNCES NEW DESERT ADVISORY
COUNCIL MEMBERS
Five vacancies on the Bureau of Land Management's California Desert District Advisory Council have been filled by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan. Four appointees are new to the Council: Mary Ann Fisher of Los Angeles, Elden Hughes of Whittier, Glenn Sudmeier of Hesperia, and James Bagley of Twentynine Palms. Independence resident Mary DeDecker has been reappointed to her second term.

We are extremely pleased with our new District Advisory Council appointees, said Gerald E. Hillier, BLM's California Desert District Manager. "Together with our current members, this represent the wide diversity of viewpoints, geographical location, and knowledge that reflects opinions on public lands in Southern California, as well as broad knowledge of its resources."

Fisher, appointed to a Public-at-Large position on the Council, is Director of Public Relations and Executive Editor of the Automobile Club of Southern California's Westways and Auto Club News publications. She is replacing Clayton Record, who served on the Council for more than six years and was part of the first Desert District Advisory Council. Record resigned in March 1988.
Hughes will fill the Environmental Protection position on the Council, replacing DeDecker, who maves4 to the Renewable Resources position. Hughes is a long-term Desert activist, the immediate past Chair of the Sierra Club's Angeles Chapter. and Chairman of the Board of Director: for the Kelso Depot Fund.
The Wildlife position on the Council will be filled by Sudmeier, who replaces Loren Lutz. Lutz, who was Chairman of the Council and served as a member for seven years was not eligible for reappointment. Sudmeier is an active member of the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep and has participated in many conservation projects.

Bagley, who assumes a Public-At-Large position, replaces Caroline Maddock, another six-year veteran of the Council. Maddock recently was appointed to BLM's National Public Lands Advisory council. Bagiey is a realtor and San Bernardino County Planning Commissioner, and the first representative from Twentynine Palms to serve on the Council.

DeDecker has been reappointed to the Council for her second three-year term, but assumes the position representing Renewable Resources within the group. She is a distinguished botanist in the Mojave Desert and eastern Sierra Nevada, and an active member of the California Native Plant Society. She replaces Richard Rudnick.
