The Desert Sage
A ROAD and PEAK GUIDE for the DPS has been long talked about, with pros & cons on both sides. Those against say: "We don't want the peaks overrun with hikers and that finding the route and the peak is half the fun of the climbing adventure."
Those in favor say its no fun to lose a day of work or vacation chasing maps and wishing that you had an old issue of "DESERT SAGE" that was printed before YOU became a member.
Most DPSers that I have talked to, would like a GUIDE. I hope the section will make it its' goal to print this GUIDE.
I have gone thru my old "Desert Sages" for the last 4 years and have inputted all road and hiking info into my computer. I have made 10 copies of the first rough draft and distributed them to members of management & mountaineering committees for input.
Their input was: The format should be one peak per page (except for a few peaks that go together, such as; Boundary Pk & Montgomery Mtn, Charleston Pk & Mummy Mtn) and on the back will. be the topographic map for the peak!
The amount of input can be almost overwhelming, and as Ron Jones says; "We don't want to print garbage." but we have to start somewhere. We have decided to print the "Road & Peak Guide" one range or less per issue as part of the "Desert Sage". Thanks to Maris Valkass' help you will find San Diego & Imperial County Ranges in this issue. I'm asking Gene Olsen to help with the Arizona & Mexico Ranges and Ron Jones with Death Valley Ranges. We need volunteers to help us with the other mtn ranges.
All members are requested to help us by reporting corrections, additions and alternate routes. When a Peak write-up gets an up-date, a new page will be printed in the "Desert Sage"! Hopefully, in two years or less we will have a complete and accurate "Road & Peak Guide!"
