THE DESERT DESERVES OUR
PROTECTION TOO |
The California Desert is a
phenomenon every bit as grand and glorious as our coast. Covering 25 million
acres, the desert spreads south from the Death Valley National Monument to the
Mexican border and east from the Sam Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains to
the Colorado River. Altogether, the California Desert accounts for about
one-quarter of our state's land surface. I believe that the California
Desert deserves protection every bit as much as our coastline. That's why I
authored and recently introduced in the Senate the California Desert Protection
Act. The bill includes provisions -
- Designating 4.5 million acres of desert lands as
wilderness, to be administered by the Bureau of Land Management.
- Redesignating two national monuments - Death Valley and
Joshua Tree - as national parks.
- Creating a new Mojave National Park
- Completing a long-pending proposal for the expansion of
the Red Rock Canyon State Park.
- Creating a botanical area - the Desert Lily Sanctuary -
and an historical area - the Indian Canyons.
While many people think of the desert as arid and
lifeless, quite the reverse is true. Within one of the areas to be protected,
the Bighorn Mountains wilderness, are several ecosystems -- including yellow
pine forest, pinyon juniper forest, joshua tree forest and the creosote scrub
community. The |

Beauty blooms in the
desert too. My bill creates a 2,000 acre Desert Lily Sanctuary in Riverside
County to protect this delicate flower. |
Chemehuevi Mountain area encompasses numerous
Indian archeological sites as well as such wildlife as bighorn sheep and the
desert tortoise. Within the South Algodones wilderness is one of the largest
sand dune systems in America. The Mojave Desert alone has more natural
wonders than many states. The area contains 16 mountain ranges, four dry lakes,
a perennial stream, numerous washes, mesas, buttes, badlands, cinder cones,
lava beds, caves, alluvial fans and the state's most complex sand dune
system. All the land covered in this legislation is already under federal
ownership. That means there will be virtually no additional cost involved. The
bill also leaves 4.6 million acres available for multiple uses - including
hunting, mining, grazing and motorized recreation. The California Desert is
one of nature's most dazzling creations. I believe we owe it to ourselves and
our children to preserve and protect this unique treasure. |
