This was another great trip where we had 49 participants, and some 20 cars. (we should try to arrange bigger carpools). Friday night the weather did not look good. We had rain as far as San Diego. However, once we were in the desert, the sky became clear and the temperature was warm. Saturday morning we met at the highway monument on County Road S2, which is just at the southern entrance to Anza Borrego State Park. We caravaned .4 mi north to a dirt road and turned left going to Dos Cabezas. After 3.9 mi, at the RR tracks we turned left for 1.6 mi, where we crossed the tracks. We followed the dirt road to Dos Cabezas Spr. The road is passable to all cars, and there was ample parking and camping. On this trip I discovered the CB radio. Pete Hiatt, who was following me in his car, had a CB. Randy Bernard, who brought up the rear had just purchased a portable unit. I came to a place where all of the cars could not pass, so I simply asked Pete to contact Randy and asked him to scout the route and report to me via the radio. He accomplished this very quickly and we were able to get to the right place with minimum of delay. We had 3.5 leaders on this trip. Since I had a bum leg, I was not even sure if I could climb the peak, so I asked Sherry Harsh to take over the lead, and Randy Bernard to assist. Sherry in turn asked Jim Farkas to be the point, and Bernard to handle the rear action. My job was to be the mouthpiece in communication and to take note for the report. The following people participated; (if your name is misspelled, it is your writing, or maybe my typing) |

My estimate of the trip was about 4 mi round trip, back to the cars by 1 to 2 pm. Well, Jim, being in front, did not know of my plan and selected his own route via Mortero Palms and then up a gully to a ridge. We did not see any palms, but we must have seen all the little summits on the range before we got to the top that counted. It was 1 pm when we reached the top, and we had used up all my estimated mileage and 80% of the time. Although there was some grumbling, and maybe an occasional threat, everyone made the peak and was better for it, including an 8 yr old boy Zack Zoschke. We descended a prominent gully to the east to a lower plateau and continued in a gully in north east direction back to cars. |
