CB MADNESS STRIKES THE DPS by Randy Bernard

A product report on the Genera] Electric (GE) Citizens Band radio model "HELP" #3-5908. Price about $50.00 at Best products catalog Store and many other stores. Our chairman- Maris Valkass and I have both purchased one of these radios and found on two DPS trips that having communications between front and rear of caravans on dirt roads very useful. Out in the desert the range of this4 watts, two-way radio is quite long, over 15 miles with clear voice transmission. This unit is very small at about 5 pounds and is portable as it comes in its own carrying case and to operate is very simple: 1. Attach magnet antenna to roof, 2. Plug adapter into cigarette lighter. 3. Turn radio on.
As there are only 40 channel to broadcast on, so we decided that we should pick a number easy for the DPS to remember when talking to each other, there is now 93 peaks on the list, spelled backward is 39. Therefore CHANNEL 39 is now the DPS CB channel.
A "handle" is generally used when on the air, listed below are the hand1es of some Desert Peakers; (more to follow)
"LE BURRO" - Ron Jones "MARIS THE CAT" - Maris Valkass
"MR CLEAN" - Bill Faulkner "DESERT DOG" - Randy (Saint) Bernard
