CONSIDERATIONS FOR LISTING PEAKS

Selection of a peak for the DPS List should be based on many considerations, and not just on the climbing qualities as it seems to be done at present. The purpose of DPS is to explore and stimulate interest in climbing desert mountain ranges. This phrase has a much broader meaning, in my mind, than elevation gain.

I submit that the phrase includes:

1. Uniqueness (geology, flora, fauna, etc)
2. Scenic value
3. New area
4. Historical value
5. Potential interest to climbers/members
6. Climbing qualities

I will also add that consideration of difficulty, distance, proximity of another peak is not important. No one is forced to climb.

PROPOSAL FOR ADDING CRATER MT. TO DPS LIST

Location: It is located in Mono County in a small mountain range named Mono Craters. It is the highest of two prominent craters, reaching an altitude of 9172 ft.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE LIST

1. The peak is located in one of the most scenic areas in the northern desert. It is surrounded by the Sierras, Whites, and bounded by Mono Lake.
2. It is also located in one of the most unique geologic areas in the country. The area is reported by various scientific organizations as being potentially the most active volcanic area in the U.S.
3. The area is abundant with volcanic and lava formations, and resembles scenes from the lunar surface.
4. The peak provides a 2000 ft gain on a soft pumice slope.
5. This is the only peak in the area providing such a grand view and which would add a new desert area for members and others to explore.

NOPAH, PAHRUNP, STEWART: Feb 15-16-17 Announcement: For those who don't get that Monday off, and those who don't want to drive home Monday with a snoot full of champagne, the LIST FINISH AND PARTY IS ON SUNDAY, AFTER PAHRUMP. We will have knocked off Stewart earlier.
