| Sunday morning we caravaned
to Smith roadhead following Ron Jones supplied directions. We drove North, on
Greenwater Road, to the intersection of the road leading to Dead Man Pass and
3/4 mile further to the road going west to Smith. (See AAA map Death Valley).
At this point we left all low clearance cars and consolidated into 2 4-w drive
trucks and Barbara Raab's 2-w drive Toyota pick-up. Although Barbara's driving
skill got her through, the low clearance resulted in some damage to the
underside of her truck. 90% of the road is quite good but about two miles from
the roadhead, there are two bad spots. The climb of Smith is class 1. The view from the top is breathtaking. All people made it. Martha Bean climbed Smith, her second DPS Peak. Francoise Walthert climbed her third peak. Barbara Raab, from Escondido, brought some of her friends from San Diego. Gale Hanna, who has been on at least one other DPS trip, will be finishing the HPS list in June. Terry Suitor, also from San Diego, is a two time HPS list finisher. Both Marys (Gygax and Miller) worry me though, Gygax could not find both her sox and delayed us all getting started. On the way back from the climb, she had to take off her boots only to discover that all of her sox were on one foot. I don't know how long they've been there. Miller is not much better...she left her clothes at the hot springs and we had to drive 10 miles back to pick them up. Aren't these signs of and advanced age? ![]() My thanks to Barbara and Terry for leading the group partly down Nopah while some of us climbed the second summit. Thanks to Barbara and Mary Sue for providing rides to Smith roadhead. Last but certainly not least, thanks to Mary Gygax for her company and assistance on the trip. |
