DPS Mountaineering Committee Report

A survey was conducted and a meeting held to poll DPS List Finishers on their criteria to be used in judging whether or not a peak should be added (and conversely deleted) to the list. Following is a general consensus of opinions on that subject plus some added comments related to list addition.
  1. Most respondents agreed that the list should be expanded.

  2. Opinions as to whether or not peaks should be deleted were about equally divided.

  3. List additions could come from:

    1. New ranges (but not necessarily from ranges further out than those presently on the list).

    2. Ranges presently on the list (peaks other than the high point of the range).

    3. Resurrection of previous recommendations for list addition.
  4. The criteria should be kept as flexible as possible.

    1. The present non-official criteria are: distance, total elevation gain, dominance of an area, inaccessibility, climbing challenge, historical and geographical significance, flora and fauna, fifteen hundred feet minimum gain, within 500 miles of Los Angeles, good view.

    2. Peaks with access problems, ie: private property or military restrictions should not be added and should probably be deleted if already on.

    3. Committee note: with the recent Club restriction of Class 4 and higher climbs, "E" rated peaks should not be added.

It has also been proposed that a Desert Wilderness (canyon) Traverse List be included as an option for DPS Leaders and Members. This list would be separate from the Peak List and would include trips in the Inyos, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, and Utah Canyon Country.

The Mountaineering Committee actively solicits comments from Members on either of the above subjects.
