Five Years Ago in the DPS

New members this period included Mariana Dubinski Camphausen and Mike Scuderi. The only trips reported for Jan-Feb 1980 in the SAGE were Bill Bradley & I leading Corkscrew and Eagle #2 with the usual side-trip to see Marta Becket at the Armagosa Opera House; Bill Bradley and I driving literally just a little farther than the road's end at the Mopah roadhead and leading 15 to Mopah and Umpah and 13 to Turtle Mtn the next day. Campy and Barbara Reber had 14 on their trip to Stepladder and Chemehuevi.

Ten Years Ago

Dave Hammond, John Tenero, John Hellman, Mary Bihl Dick Banner and Jim Cervenka were new members reported joining in Jan-Feb 1975. Shirley Akawie became List Finisher #14 in Picacho Pk. The DPS Management Committee under Chairman George Hubbard adapted a set of guidelines to be followed when considering additions to the Peaks List. These were:
#1, Minimum 1500 ft gain on foot
#2, In the desert within a 500 mi radius of LA
#3, Peak should have desirable characteristics like:
      A, Good summit view
      B, Area domination
      C, Non-trivial route finding
      D, Flora & fauna
      E, Exceptional environs
#4, Led on DPS scheduled trip
#5, Legally accessible to the public.

Long-long time DPS member (near charter member from the '40s) and former DPS Chair Bob Bear stated that he, "favored a long and varied list not too rigidly restricted in order to encourage all tastes and abilities and to provide lots of opportunity to bag qualifying peaks. Over nearly 30 years of DPS climbing I've noted all too many climbers who loose interest after gaining Section membership, section pin or completing the list." He adds that legal accessibility should include access by special permission peaks like Patterson, N.Y. Butte & White with 4WD roads to or near the summit which few climbers (or even 4WDers) would use. Abe Siemens (lacking one peak of list finishing) wrote the SAGE calling for a peaks purging committee which would recommend peaks for delisting and modest guidelines for retention.
John Robinson led a private trip to Pico Matomi from Matomi Canyon the gem of the San Pedro Martirs in Baja (ANY ONE WITH 4WD WANT TO REPEAT THIS 4 DAY TRIP, MAR-MAY '85 CONTACT RON JONES). Henry Heusinkveld & Harry Brumer led 20 on New York Mtn & Clark; Jon & Bernie Petitjean led 20 to Sombrero & Jacumba; Roy & Barbara Magnuson led 32 on Spectre & Sheephole.

Twenty Years Ago

Ralph Shanklund became emblem holder number 127 and Ed Ostrenga joined the DPS in Jan-Feb 1965. Baboquivari was added to the DPS list at the Feb annual meeting and Big Picacho was designated as a Emblem Peak. Hugh Parshall led 47 on a New Year's camp out at Palm Canyon and a climb by 31 of Kofa. Gordon MacLeod and Arkel Erb led a group of 14 to Pico Risco.
