NOTICE

The DPS Mountaineering Committee serves to consider changes, additions and deletions to the UPS peak list. Proposals meeting their approval are them placed on the annual ballot to be voted on by the Section membership. The only proposal received at this time is to change the status of the Arizona EMBLEM PEAK from Kofa to Baboquivari. The present short easy route on Kofa cuts climbing time down to one or one and one half hours. It is suggested that this easy route diminishes the emblem status of the peak. It should be retained on the peak list but the emblem be moved to the more worthy Arizona peak, Baboquivari.
ANY COMMENTS to this proposal or any other changes to the DPS peak list should be made to Chuck Stein, Chairman UPS Mountaineering Committee

COMMENT

The above old tired proposal has been voted down by the Desert Peaks Section membership three if not four times in recent years. As regards Baboquivari as an emblem, there are moderate to severe access problems. On the west we are subjected to the whimsies of the Papagos and on the east by a very poor road and irate Arizona cattle ranchers. Neither of these reasons are conducive to changing the status of a peak to an emblem. As Kofa is almost always led by the 4th class route, this would indicate very little interest in a short route. Kofa should retain emblem status. We need some new proposals, new peaks, new additions and new areas.
