| THE CHAIRMAN'S
CORNER As a group leader in BMTC, I've been disappointed each year in the small number of my students who end up being active climbers. Last year, after the course was over, I had a trip to Little Picacho with my group. Those who went along have been some of the most active students ever, in terms of graduating and taking LTC, I was informed by several of them that the Little Picacho trip was what turned them on. Apparently BMTC students are shy about applying for trips. They are worried that the trip may be beyond them, or that they may not fit in. Special trips labeled "Desert Peaks BMTC, or equivalent" would attract and break the ice for them. It would help students to become active climbing members of the Sierra Club if our DPS leaders would schedule trips each spring which mentioned in the schedule that BMTC students were welcome. I suggest that on such trips, you include at least three or four old school-tie types to set the group pattern as a student DPS trip, not just another BMTC training trip. |
