Dear Mary Sue: Each time there emerges a controversy regarding adding peaks to the DPS list, the vocal and argumentative contributors to the Desert Sage mention "bad" or non-representative peaks which remain on the list. Each of the major climbing sections of the Los Angeles Chapter regularly face the same dilemma. How can we add Saline Peak, i.e., to the list when there are other, equally shabby peaks, still on there? With the direction of the National Sierra Club we have deleted fine peaks in Mexico. Phil Bruce proposed a distance limit for eliminating peaks, this in the interest of conserving fuel. Fine! I would like to propose a system, analogous to the U. S. Congress. One can enter there as a Senator or Representative if you boot someone worse than yourself out. Let's amend the bylaws to delete one and replace one peak, with some provision for a logical number of peaks, always in good standing. I nominate deleting Nelson Peak which I have climbed three times, (Ron, please note) and I am looking for a worthy candidate within the radius of Boundary/Montgomery to replace it. Keep up your good work, Mary Sue. New blood in Section offices is refreshing, too. |
Warmly, ![]() |
