I have
enjoyed serving the DPS, and I am particularly proud of our successful banquet
in May which was highlighted by a presentation from Dr. John McCosker, Director
of the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. Many thanks to my excellent
management committee and to all members and supporters.
I am dedicating
my final column to our fellow member, Jackie Van Dalsem, who died in a
mountaineering accident on Mt. McKinley, June 20, 1983. Her mother chose this
quotation from John Muir as a remembrance to Jackie. It expresses well our
feelings both for Jackie and for the days of our lives spent in the
mountains. |
"Oh, these vast, calm, measureless
mountain days, inciting at once to work and rest!
Days in whose
light everything seems equally divine, opening a thousand windows to
show us God. Never more, however weary, should one faint by the way
who gains the blessings of one mountain day; whatever her fate, long
life, short life, stormy or calm, she is rich forever." |
