Two of our long-time members have recommended peak additions to the DPS list. Ron Jones has proposed Saline Peak and Dick Akawie has nominated Virgin Peak. Following are the arguments, pro and con, for each peak. After careful consideration and much, discussion, the Mountaineering Committee has decided not to go on record, either for or against, but to let the membership make this decision, by casting their vote on the upcoming ballot.

PRO

SALINE PEAK Two exploratory climbs of this peak, located in the scenic Saline Valley, have been led, on 1/14/79 and 3/2/80. It opens up a large new desert basin, big as the Panamint Valley, with tremendous views of the east face of the Inyos; the impressive west face of Dry Mountain; a peek into the Eureka Valley; a peek at the Sierra etc. It also affords a rare opportunity for hot springs bathing. It can be combined with a good climb of Dry, interesting exploratories in the Inyos, maybe Beveridge Canyon and mining camp, possibly even Keynot. Inyo has been day hiked from the Saline Valley. It might even be combined with Waucoba. As for the road condition, DPS roads are notorious for car problems, examples being the approach to Boundary/Montgomery, the drive up to Panamint City, etc. The peak is relatively easy, but so are Sandy, Orocopia, Kofa from the north, Nelson, Old Dad, Old Woman, Smith, Brown, and others.

CON

Although Saline Peak can be combined with an interesting climb of Dry, that leaves Tin to be climbed alone from the other side. The peak ascent itself is a rather boring trudge up a ridge with no distinguishing characteristics. The approach road is horrible from the Hot Springs, and if you're into hot springs bathing, you can always join the Sierra Singles. The view from the top is rather good, but should we be adding a peak to the list just because of the scenery?
