The Desert Sage
DPSers know what a special place the desert is and that it is especially so during the holiday season. Who can ever be unhappy when one can chase away the blues with memories of outings like Gene Olsen's Thanksgiving celebration in the Colorado desert or the annual Thanksgiving quest for Cerro de la Encantada? Who can be unhappy when lured by the anticipation of climbs to the Superstitions, Kino, Ajo, Weavers Needle, and all other faraway prizes that need holiday time. Finding this special ambience often supercedes the announced Intention of bagging a peak.

So the desert is a very special place, but so are you DPSers who seek her out. A particular very special DPSer is Chuck Stein who wears a number of hats for the Sierra Club. Besides being our Secretary-Treasurer, Chuck, as Chairman for a new section, The Inner City Outings is trying to provide outing and conservation experiences for city young people. The section launched Its first hike by making a traverse In Griffith Park starting at Lake Hollywood and ending up at the Merry-Go-Round. The new section is also successfully sponsoring monthly hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains for patients of a private hospital enabling them to benefit from nature's therapy.

Two more special things are the reproductions below courtesy of Gordon Bartlett, an intermediate school student and your Uncle Sam.

Happy Holidays in the desert,
