Five Years Ago in the DPS

The 1976 Management Committee helped by Bill T. Russell proposed 8 changes to the DPS by-laws including: #4 list completion status and pin, #5-6 any member can petition for changes in the DPS peak list, #7 emblem requirement changed to 20 peaks and #8 adding So. Guardian Angel as an emblem peak. Expatriate DPSer Bob Michael from Colorado described his climb of Mt. Trumbull, Arizona high point of the western Grand Canyon country. Bob also wrote up a DPS exploratory trip to Canones Agua Caliente, Carrizo and a climb of Cerro Chato in the Sierra Juarez in Baja in December. Wes Shelberg and Jack Grams explored Morman and Davidson Pks in Nevada. John Hellman led 22 up Providence and Mitchell and had a tire campfire with "X-rated memoirs." Ron Jones led 4 on a climb of Charleston-Mummy. Ken Jones climbed Kofa on Christmas day to earn his emblem. There were no list finishers this period.

Ten Years Ago in the DPS

Fran Smith in his "Peeps from the Peak" in 1971 announced the 1971 by-law changes and gave credits to Miriam Romero for her efforts in conservation of the desert pupfish and John Vitz, newsletter editor, for six newsletters in a row out on time. New DPS members included Dennis Lantz and Jon Inskeep. Harry Brumer, Chuck Harmon, Cliff Black, Jack Bradford, Carleton Shay, Chuck Jones and Bill Winkle earned their emblems. Paul Lipsohn's VW bug blew up in Trona on an otherwise successful climb of Manly and Corkscrew led by Paul Nelson. Jon Vitz led a group up Martinez and celebrated his 100th DPS peak on top with a "short drink."

Twenty Years Ago in the DPS

In December 1961 John Robinson was elected DPS Chairman for 1962; Walt Wheelock, Vice Chairman; Bob Greenawalt, Secy-Treas; and Members at Large, Harry Melts and Parker Severson. Robinson continued as editor of the DPS newsletter. Dry Mountain led by Bob Greenawalt became "wet" as it was rained out. The November rain-out of Nopah was changed to a climb of non-listed Cave led by Bud Bingham. Tom and Trudie Hunt led 13 persons on a Thanksgiving climb of non-listed (at that time) Cerro Pinacate in Sonora. At the same time Bud Bingham led a group of four on the 5th-8th registered climbs of Pico Risco Pk in Baja. There were no emblem climbers after Walt Wheelock in 1959 and Jay Davis in February 1960 until Gene Gail and Russ Mohn both in February 1963.
